SOP Lagoon

SOP® Lagoon is a powdered additive for the treatment of the liquid manure of dairy cows. It helps the farmers with the management of liquid manure, dissolving any crusts or sediment, keeping it fluid and reducing/eliminating the need for agitators. Furthermore, it reduces the formation and emission of odors, ammonia and GHGs from the stored manure, as well as that spread on the fields, and improves the fertilizing properties of the liquid manure.

The results, from studies carried out at both the University of Milan and the University of California at Davis, indicate that SOP Lagoon is the only additive in the world capable of simultaneously reducing emissions of ammonia and GHGs such as methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide, without accumulating nitrates in the liquid manure.

Scientific research published between 2019 and 2023, in collaboration with the University of Milan and UC Davis in California, has confirmed the effectiveness of SOP Lagoon in reducing emissions by up to:

- 80% methane

- 75% carbon dioxide

- 100% ammonia

- 100% nitrous oxide

Furthermore, the empowered capacity to influence microorganisms results in a reduction of crust and sediment and an improvement in manure fluidization, as well as a reduction of odor and a reduction in the attraction of flies.

A specific test carried out by UC Davis has also confirmed a significant reduction in odor.

It is, therefore, possible to improve the sustainability of liquid manure management :

Economic sustainability for the farmer, limiting agitation, spreading and fertilization costs

Environmental sustainability, reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers, the risk of nitrate leaching into ground waters and GHG emissions

Social sustainability, limiting ammonia and odor emissions, precursors of fine particulate formation.

The use of SOP Lagoon has recorded:

Action on emissions:

  • reduction of polluting gas emissions (ammonia)
  • reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide)
  • reduction of odors and consequent improvement in relationship with neighbours

Valorization of the liquid manure:

  • reduction of crust and sediment in the storage pits
  • reduction of crust formation and crop scorching during spreading
  • reduction in flies
  • conversion of the nitrogen into a form that is more assimilable for the crops.

SOP Lagoon - instructions for use

Application instructions and doses:
Mix the product with water and pour directly over the slats, in the receiving pit or in the main storage pit. If it is not possible to use SOP LAGOON directly in the main storage pit, it is enough to use the product under the slats or in the receiving pit: the product will flow into the main storage pit with the manure.
In the case of floating crusts, the product should be poured through a tube, for the first few interventions, so that the it gets down below the crust (see scheme). In this situation, it is recommended to lower the flow shutters of the liquid manure pit until a good level of fluidization has been obtained.
If the product is not currently in use, an activation phase is necessary.
To be mixed with liquid manure, suitable for all types of crops.

2 g (0.07 oz) per week for every head supplying manure to the pit, receiving pit or under the slats.

Activation (first 4 weeks):
In addition to the regular dosage, add 4 g (0.14 oz) for every m3 of stored liquid manure, per week. In the case of large volumes of liquid manure, SOP LAGOON ACTIVATOR can be used for the activation phase.

PROFESSIONAL USE. Contact the company for more specific recommendations.

SOP Lagoon - what they say about us

Since 2001, SOP has been in the front line, helping farmers to improve the health and productivity of their cows. Many of them have been using SOP Lagoon for more than 10 years and the benefits they are receiving are extremely positive and with no side effects.

Here are some of their testimonials:

Richard Isaac, Glenn Farm, UK: “I have been using SOP Lagoon for a while and I saw a difference in a couple of weeks, with the slurry bubbling. In the past when we have emptied the tower we have had to have the tractor and pump stirring for most of the time. When we emptied it this time we did 50% less stirring as there was no crust. The tower was emptied out right to the bottom. With less solids it was emptied out much quicker which made my contractor happy. Muck used to hang on the sides, but it doesn’t anymore.”

Mr Jones, Pantyrhendy, UK: “At the time I started using SOP Lagoon there was a thick crust on the slurry which used to take about ten hours to mix. After a couple of months it was completely mixed within one hour.”

Harry & Ian McKnight, UK: “Previously we found it difficult to mix the tank thoroughly, sometimes stirring it for 4 hours or more. In autumn we opted to use SOP Lagoon with fantastic results. In the spring the tank had no crust and after a quick mix was ready to spread. SOP Lagoon is easy to use and we'll definitely continue to use it.”

Peter Scharringa, technical manager in Select Sires Genervations, Canada: “In regards to our experience with the SOP Lagoon here in Canada, we are seeing a very good reduction of agitating time for dairy farms who are using the SOP Lagoon. We are seeing over 60% less agitating time once the manure lagoon or pit has been properly activated. The other benefits of the SOP Lagoon is the reduction of flies and also the odor is vastly reduced. This again is very evident when the SOP Lagoon is properly used.   We have also seen the difference in crops that have had manure spread on it that has been treated with SOP Lagoon and the crops that were not. Certainly shows the value that SOP Lagoon contributes to the manure when spreading it on land.”

Serenissima farm, Italy: “We reduced the gaseous emissions in the atmosphere and consequently we have less odors in the farm, noxious for people, during storage and spreading.”

Martelli farm, Italy: “In the storage tank, we see less crust formation and the solid part dissolves better.”

L’agrifoglio farm, Italy: “We noticed a great odor and ammonia emission reduction. The slurry is more fluid in the tank.”
